I must have been in my early twenties when I read Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. A handful of scenes have stuck in my mind, along with the idea of how a scrappy tree or resilient person can find a way to live and grow despite unsparing circumstances. Six by eight inches; modern black frame is 3 inches deep.
